What Is Mehir?

According to the Presidency of Religious Affairs (Diyanet), the mehir is money or property the husband is obliged to give his wife as an obligation arising from the marriage contract. Even if it is not specified at the time of the marriage, the wife is entitled to a mehir.

Mehr-i muaccel (prompt mehir)
Mehir paid in advance — delivered at the time of the marriage.
Mehr-i müeccel (deferred mehir)
Mehir whose payment is postponed — paid on the agreed date.
Mehr-i müsemmâ (specified mehir)
Mehir whose amount is set at the time of the marriage.
Mehr-i misil (equivalent mehir)
If no amount is specified, the mehir received by comparable women is taken as the basis.
